Top 10 (vol. 20 funniest movie comedies)
Time to spice things up, NPO:
Anchorman
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Office Space
Napolean Dynomite
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Kung Fu Hustle (replacing: Dumb and Dumber)
Zoolander
Best in Show
Down with Love
Billy Madison
Notable snub: Animal House - the most over rated movie of all time, lets face it, it just isn’t funny.
I wholeheartedly disagree with your snub of Animal House. Also with the exception of Monty Python, nothing more than about 15 years old. Now my list:
10. Anchorman
09. Cable Guy
08. Pineapple Express/Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke (basically the same movie but both funny)
07. Anything with Bill Murray
06. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
05. Animal House
04. Hot Fuzz
03. Hot Shots: Part Deux
02. Airplane!
01. Step Brothers
oh man i just remembered what movie Down With Love was, BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Remember the 11th Commanment, Thou Shalt Not Laugh at Bad Romantic Comedies. Why didn’t you just put How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? I mean really if you’re going to put any romantic comedy on the list it has to be Love Actually.
Down With Love is not just a good romantic comedy, it’s a Fucking Great Romantic Comedy. It’s brilliant. And hilarious.
Now, on the other hand, Escape from Guantanamo Bay is fucking capital-G Garbage, compared to the first Harold and Kumar, but especially compared to any movie ever. Seriously it’s awful. Rob Cordry and the guy from Saw 2 are kind of funny, and Neil Patrick Harris is always hysterical, but seriously this movie is terrible (pronounced terry-bley like how the Spaniards say it).
Here’s my list, shit-can my choices at your convenience.
(NPO)
1. Billy Madison- this movie is so much funnier than Happy Gilmore, why doesn’t anybody else understand?
2. Pineapple Express- awesome stoner comedy, awesome 80s action movie ripoff.
3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail- I wish all the people who claim to “LOVE” this movie could “love” it enough to ignore the absurdity of it for one second and realize that it’s actually one of the smartest comedies EVER written.
4. Planet Terror- I realize this isn’t a comedy but if you don’t think it’s one of the funniest movies ever then you haven’t seen it.
5. Tropic Thunder- From Fatties: Fart 2 to “Going full retard” to Tom Cruise, this movie is the balls.
6. Hot Fuzz- The best “spoof”(anybody want to argue about whether or not it’s a spoof?) ever made, and one of the finer examples of classical story-telling (where every element brought into the story pays off before the end) in recent cinema.
7. Mallrats (anybody want to argue about that one?)
8. The Big Lebowski (I’ve seen this more times than any other movie on this list and I will probably watch it more times in the future than any other movie on this list.
9. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas- Again, not a comedy, but Hunter S. Thompson’s writing keeps things unbelievably funny while at the same time being remarkably poignant.
10. Step Brothers- This one was ALMOST Anchorman. If the deleted subplot about the gang of philosophical bank robbers called The Alarm Clock had been kept in the movie, Anchorman would own this spot, and this whole list. But since it wasn’t, I’m choosing “nachos, and Lemonheads, and my dad’s boat!”
But just so we all know, Animal House is funny as shit.
How you can say anything with Renee Zellweger is brilliant and keep a straight face, I’ll never know. Second, referring to someone as “the guy from Saw 2″ informs people that after seeing Saw 1 you willingly wasted your time/money on watching any sequel. But using a critique of the “War on Terror” as a backdrop for a stoner comedy IS brilliant.
I won’t argue with your decision to put Planet Terror into your list because it is damn funny, the second funniest zombie movie ever (Shaun of the Dead). Also has anybody seen the Day of the Dead with Ving Rhames and Mena Suvari, I knew it was going to be bad going in but it was worth watching just to see a scene with zombies running with guns and shooting wildly.
I do have an argument with putting Tropic Thunder on the list b/c both Jack Black and Ben Stiller gave lackluster performances. Tom Cruise was damn funny as well as Danny McBride and Robert Downey Jr. but that just wasn’t enough to make that movie a Top 10.
I also want to give an honorable mention to The Big Lebowski, and just about any other Coen Brothers movie. Kevin Smith movies on the other hand, though funny, upon watching ten or fifteen years later just don’t hold up so well.
Yeah, i meant the ‘anybody want to argue’ thing not because Mallrats is considered his worst movie, but because Kevin Smith flicks just don’t hold up. Totally accurate.
And I didn’t call Renee Zellweger brilliant. But Down With Love is brilliantly written. Come on. Cooome onnn.
Black is underused in Tropic Thunder, and his character is shallowly written. But I think it’s one of my favorite Ben Stiller performances. I mean, he wants to remain a prisoner performing Simple Jack three times a day because they love him so much? So funny, and so much better than any of his romantic comedies where he plays the straight everyman who gets shit on for an hour and a half.
And the War on Terror is a hilarious backdrop for H&K, honestly it’s amazing and I wish the movie lived up to that element, because everything else is sub-par toilet humor.
Oh, and Saw 2 is way better than the first one, but they’re both wastes of time compared to Cabin Fever.
Yeah, Down with Love IS brilliant, even if it is just a rip off of Pillow Talk (which is also brilliant, but not as funny IMO).
I almost put Tropic Thunder on my list, but it just doesn’t have that many laugh out loud parts for me (same reason Big Lebowski isn’t on the list, its great, but not laugh out loud funny). Agree with the Stiller romantic comedy critique though, hence Zoolander, which is one of the most under rated comedies out there.
Kevin Smith movies suck, the sooner we all realize this, the better.
Seriously, Animal House is not funny, SO over rated.
I do realize Monty Python is brilliant and I still think Hot Fuzz sucks.
You haven’t actually seen it.
and I’ll never give it more than 40 minutes.
mistake
oh man i have some opinions about some of the things said here, but I’ll save those for later. For now… The List:
1: )Christmas Vacation (how is this not on anyone’s list yet?)
2: )Vacation (remember when National Lampoon didn’t make piece-of-shit films?)
3: )Caddy Shack (That’s right, count ‘em three movies with Chevy Chase.)
4: )The Money Pit (oh Tom Hanks, the acting gods have blessed ye, indeed.)
5: )Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (I’m not a huge fan of steve martin, hes the reason 3 amigos didnt make this list… that and i didnt want to have 4 chevy chase flicks, but this is just great great stuff here people.)
6: )Anchorman (best will ferrel movie ever… lets argue it)
7: )Dirty Work (almost as underrated as zoolander. chris farley is genius and so is norm macdonald, now one of them is dead and the other might as well be.)
8: )Loaded Weapon 1 (if you haven’t seen this movie, run, don’t walk to your nearest video rental place or electronics store and rent it, or buy it.)
9: )Zoolander (God this movie is underrated. its so funny people!!)
10: )Napolean Dynamite (As God is my witness, this movie was timeless when it was made, and it will forever be timeless. Our children’s children will think this movie is funny - guarantee it.)
I know it seems as though I’m starting a flame for flames sake but honestly I’m not. Now, I LOVE Napoleon Dynamite but it is only funny to certain people (read: geeks under 35). Our children’s children (man I hope I never have any of those) will not think this movie is funny. Seriously, show this movie to anybody who was a full blown jock in high school or is old enough to have made the decision between Dukakis and Bush the First, they will not laugh AT ALL.
hmmm i guess because it was SO funny to me i assumed a broader appeal. I think the reason I made that ridiculous statement was that I think everyone who ever went to high school, knew or made fun of or flat out were one or more or all of the characters in that film. I think what makes it great is that it’s so approachable. I think you sort of have to be in a frat to really appreciate some of Animal House’s humor, or have to have smoked weed to appreciate H&K to its fullest but Napolean doesn’t have any prerequisites to speak of and its an underdog story. so whether you were the underdog or whether you beat the shit out of the underdog its relatable and approachable. we were all kids and we all knew someone really weird…. thats it. and all of our kids will know someone really weird. and their kids.
My mom thought Napoleon Dynamite was “cute,” my sister’s critique to me was: “I didn’t really like it but I could see why you did.”
you have a sister?!?
That was the funniest comment you’ve ever made.
You can flame for flame’s sake. We can take it.
100% agree with Zoolander, and Anchorman, by far, is the best Will Ferrell movie. Napolean Dynomaite is/will be a classic. I mean, the first time I saw the trailer for it I couldn’t tell if it was shot in the 70s, 80s, 90s, or tomorrow, it is the definition of timeless.
christmas vacation and vacation? I can’t even watch those movies they’re so boring.
“Time for some good ol fashion fighting music: Street Fighter…. G -Sevonnn!”
Dirty Work is soooo funny.
My favorite part is probably when the other principal (not the wrestler) from Billy Madison is that homeless guy who keeps going into long speeches.
We eat the pig and then, together, we burn! Burn!!
i have a few comments.
Down with Love IS a hilarious movie. it is not just a romantic comedy. there is no argument that it is definitely a spoof. and a great one.
also, my mom thinks Napoleon Dynamite is hilarious. and she’s decidedly older than 35.
1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
2. The Big Lebowski
3. Young Frankenstein - sentimental reasons
4. Kung Fu Hustle
5. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny
6. Pineapple Express
7. Step Brothers
8. Planet Terror - it makes me laugh every time even if it’s not a comedy
9. Blazin Saddles - sentimental reasons
10. Knocked Up - a little sappy but makes me laugh
I’m replacing Knocked up with Clerks II.
Why replace Knocked Up? It’s better than Clerks 2.
Kung Fu Hustle is the shit.
AH! Kung Fu Hustle! How did I forget about that one, its replacing Dumd and Dumber on my list.
NPO
Ace Venture… seriously nobody included this movie?!?! It was the definition of Comedy for me for several years.
Rushmore… Nobody included any Wes Anderson movies?!?!
Caddy Shack
Planet Terror. This is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever watched. It’s gotta be intentional, come on. Nothing is THAT funny on accident.
Tommy Boy. classic Farley… and David Spade is pretty great too.
Anchorman. classic Farrell.
Zoolander… I agree this movie is totally underrated.
The Royal Tenenbaums… or should i go with The Life Aquatic
Spaceballs… great spoof.
Napolean Dynomite
okay so NPO except #1
#1 Ace Ventura- funniest movie ever
royal tenenbaums
the first austin powers movie
planet terror- supremely gross but subtly hilarious
happy gilmore
dungeons and dragons- this isn’t intentionally hilarious, but one of the best movie watching experiences you’ll ever have….provided there are people there with you to watch it.
dirty work
mallrats
adaptation - not funny as a whole but is there a better, funnier line in movie history than, “that’s how much fuck fish”? I think not
hot rod
I can’t think of a time recently that I laughed harder…. Hot Rod …. When he’s falling down the mountain for like two minutes straight. I was in tears and got a good ab workout too.
NPO
1. Anchorman (I wish I could’ve been on the set. You know they were in character the whole time).
2. Billy Madison (Probably watched this movie more than any other movie in my life. I need to get the DVD, because my VHS doesn’t work anymore)
3. Dumb & Dumber (That John Denver is full of shit.)
4. Life Aquatic (Probably one of my top 5 movies ever.)
5. Teen Wolf (Do I need to explain to you why this is funny?)
6. Ghostbusters (Pure Genius!)
7. Waynes World (sch-wing!)
8. Tommy Boy (#2 movie most watched)
9. Footloose (Kevin Bacon at his best. Sometimes when I’m mad and I don’t know what to do.. I just dance… and all my troubles seem to fade away. And really, do you get funnier than the premise of this movie?)
10. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (any takers?)
Notables: Step brothers, Taladega Nights (mainly because of the dinner table scenes), Pineapple Express, Cable Guy, Napolean Dynamite
i was saving pee wee’s big adventure for my top 1 list of best movie ever.
